Beware of Tampered EFTPOS Terminals...

Resources' Redicard and Visa Card users should take extra care (see ‘Tips’ below) when paying by EFTPOS. Recently, criminals have tampered with some merchants’ EFTPOS terminals. Their aim is to capture customers’ account details from the magnetic strip on the card and also their PIN as it was keyed in. This information may enable criminals to steal money from your account or produce counterfeit cards to try and do so.

Tips to Safeguard Your Account

  • Always cover your PIN when entering it into an EFTPOS terminal or ATM.
  • Following every EFTPOS transaction, check that merchant’s receipt for any irregularities - eg does the store name and location match the store where you made your purchase? If not, contact Resources Credit Union on 02 9965 1200.
  • Be aware of and monitor the amount of funds you have in your account.
  • Use Rediphone on 02 9965 1250 or Netbranch on www.resourcescu.com.au to transfer excess funds from your S1 Access Account to another, non-access account, eg S8 or S14. Always minimise the amount in your S1 Account.
  • Regularly check your statements and immediately report any irregularities.
  • Do NOT write your PIN anywhere or tell it to anyone.
  • Consider regularly changing your Personal Identification Number (PIN).
  • Resources’ Visa Cards issued or renewed from January 2010 will have a microchip which makes it virtually impossible to copy account details. Ask to use the ‘chip’ instead of the magnetic strip at EFTPOS terminals, wherever possible.
  • If you have any concerns contact Resources Credit Union on 02 9965 1200.

What is Being Done to Combat this Crime?

  • Financial service providers are sharing information with each other, the police and merchants to identify tampered EFTPOS terminals and to ‘stop’ compromised cards as soon as possible.
  • Resources Credit Union has replaced / will replace those cards which are known to have been used in affected merchant’s EFTPOS terminals.
  • Affected merchants have checked / are checking and replacing tampered terminals.
  • Visa Cards issued or renewed from January 2010 onwards will have a microchip which makes it virtually impossible to copy account details.
  • Police have arrested a number of persons who may have been involved.
